ANTI-NIMBY LAWS WILL FREE THE STATE’S VENUES

Businesses will benefit from proposed new laws that will extend trading hours and reduce red tape around alfresco dining and noise complaints.

Business NSW has welcomed so called ‘state-wide vibrancy reforms’ which will extend trading hours for live music venues by two hours, direct all relevant noise complaints to one agency and ensure temporary alfresco dining laws are made permanent.

Changes will also prevent one person from closing down a venue or curtailing its trading hours by making multiple noise complaints.

Business NSW CEO Daniel Hunter said these changes are a welcome sign the NSW Government wants to make our state’s night-time economy as vibrant as possible.

“For too long small businesses have been held hostage by a combination of impenetrable red tape and the complaints of lone NIMBYs, closing down venues and restricting the trading hours of legitimate, active business,” Mr Hunter said.

“We have seen how the Sydney Rocks precinct, for example, has been transformed by outdoor dining and sensible trading conditions - so let’s now extend this right across the state.

“Large swathes of Western Sydney lack amenity and this new legislation will be the catalyst for street innovation, entrepreneurs and different uses.

“The Purple Flag awards in Parramatta and Lakemba show that Western Sydney can lead the world in safe and diverse trading, at all hours.

“Any removal and modernisation of red tape that makes doing business easier is welcome. Businesses know best and are keen to get on with it.”
