The state’s peak business organisation, Business NSW, has applauded the NSW Government’s decision to establish a new body to lead the long-term reconstruction of flood impacted areas across Northern NSW, capitalising on collaboration between the Government, local Members of Parliament, and the local community.

The Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation (NRRC) will coordinate planning, rebuilding and construction work of essential services, infrastructure, and housing across multiple government agencies to help people in the Northern Rivers rebuild their homes and lives as quickly as possible. 

“This is a critical step in providing certainty to flood impacted communities that they will not be left behind,” said Business NSW Executive Director, Policy and Advocacy, David Harding.

“This is something we have advocated strongly for on behalf of the wider community as well as our members, so it’s great to see Premier Dominic Perrottet work closely with the local political representatives and the community on the ground,” Mr Harding said.

“This has been a difficult time for many business owners who’ve had to close their doors or operate under reduced conditions because healthy staff have been at home in isolation.” 

“This is the best plan to ensure a united, coordinated approach to the longer-term rebuilding of the flood ravaged economy across the Northern Rivers. 

“I know business leaders in the area will be keen to lend support to the advisory board of the NRRC so we can ensure the right decisions and right outcomes are prioritised for the future of the Northern Rivers. Business NSW stands ready to continue to support. 

“Business NSW has been operating a Business Support Hub in Lismore in partnership with Southern Cross University, which provides residents a range of practical support to help them re-connect with their staff, customers and suppliers.

“The NSW Government has acted quickly to support the Northern Rivers community, especially with the ‘Back Home’ scheme of up to $20,000 for residents whose homes have been damaged and who are unable to claim on insurance or natural disaster relief. 

“Today’s announcement is yet another important signal to Lismore and the surrounding communities that resources and assistance will be there to ensure we get back to business as quickly as possible,” Mr Harding said.
